My Images of Middle Earth
There was a period, from the early 70s to the time I caught glandular fever in 1982, when a phrase or sentence in The Lord of the Rings would trigger an image in my mind and I would attempt to capture it on paper. These are the results:
- Gandalf from The Hobbit
- This is from Bilbo's first meeting with Gandalf, on a bright sunny morning outside Bag End.
- Frodo's Dream
- In Tom Bombadil's House, Frodo dreams of Isengard!
- Barrow Wight!
- Pippin, Merry and Sam about to become a dark sacrifice.
- The Stranger in the Common Room
- The mysterious hooded stranger, with his long shanks stretched out before him, smoking his pipe.
- 'They are terrible!'
- Strider tells the hobbits about the black riders
- The Witch King Attacks
- A very loose interpretation of the attack on Weathertop
- Gandalf's Problem
- In the dark of Moria, Gandalf comes to a splitting of the way, and can't remember which way to take.
- The Two Towers
- A dustjacket design
- Elf Children Gaze at the First Dawn
- Inspired by the description of Merry and Pippin peering out of Fangorn
- Ent Eyes
- As described by Merry and Pippin
- Helm's Deep
- My own map of Helm's Deep
- The Return of Faramir
- After the defence of Osgiliath
