Ruckinge is a village near the Royal Military Canal in South-West Kent. It lies between Hamstreet in the west and Bilsington in the east.

Alan’s 4 x great-grandparents Robert Rayner and Ann Rayner (née Crust) arrived in Ruckinge in about 1800 with their son, also called Robert. They had only two more children: Edward (Alan’s 3 x great-grandfather) and Elizabeth (both baptised at St Mary Magdalene, Ruckinge). Ann died in 1851, and is buried at Ruckinge.
In 1824, Edward married Ann Durant at Ruckinge, where they continued to live until at least 1841. The couple had eight children: Richard (b. 1825), Jane (Alan’s 2 x great-grandmother - b. 1827), Edward (b. ca 1829), Thomas (b. ca 1833), Elizabeth (b. 1834), Mary (b. 1837), George (b. 1840) and Emily (b. 1844), all of whom where baptised at Ruckinge.

The current church dates from the 12th century. The tower was rebuilt in the 13th century, including the addition of the spire. The arcade and fenestration date mainly from the 14th and 15th centuries.
