Little Horsted (also known as Horsted Parva) lies in the flat "low" Weald area of Sussex (as opposed to the hilly, iron-producing "High Weald"). It is NNE of Lewes and part of the Rape of Pevensey. The parishes surrounding Little Horsted are Uckfield, Framfield, Ringmer and Isfield. Barcombe lies only a few kilometers to the west.
With regard to genealogy, I have two lines who touch Little Horsted: the Isteds and the Hooks.
Thomas Isted married Mary Wilding in Little Horsted 4 June 1756. Their first two children were baptised in Little Horsted before the family moved south to Ringmer. The second of these children was my 5th great-grandmother, Mary Eisted/Isted, who was baptised in St Michael & All Angels on 18 March 1759.
William Hook was born in Framfield and married Elizabeth Richardson in Alciston in 1756. Their first child was baptised in Framfield in 1757, but in 1758 William, Elizabeth and their infant daughter were removed to Little Horsted by the Parish of Framfield and their next child, William, was born in Little Horsted. Their third child Elizabeth was born back in Framfield, but the couple were back in Little Horsted for the birth of their last two children, the last being my 5th great-grandmother Martha Hook (baptised 26 May 1765).
There is evidence remaining in the chancel of a 12th century origin for the church and the tower is 15th century. However the bulk of the structure was rebuilt in the 19th century. The parish was always a rural one with a scattered population and the location of the church determined by the location of the manor house.
