Hellingly lies in the flat "low" Weald area of Sussex (as opposed to the hilly, iron-producing "High Weald"). It is North of Hailsham and part of the Rape of Pevensey. The parishes surrounding Hellingly are Chiddingly, Waldron, Heathfield, Herstmonceux, Wartling, Hailsham and Arlington.
With regard to genealogy, Hellingly is a brief departure from base for the Gurrs of Chiddingly. My 5-times great-grandmother, Elizabeth Gurr, and her four siblings were baptised in Hellingly between 1759 and 1768.

The church is sited on the south side of the current village. Possibly built on the site of an earlier church, the fabric of the building is principally late C12 to C15. In the early 16th century the parish was a hotbed of protestantism.
